Erpustakaan ini telah dibuka bagi menyediakan perkhidmatan kepada Program Teknologi Kesihatan, di bawah Fakulti Sains Gunaan pada hun 1997. Program ini menawarkan kursus-kursus di peringkat diploma dalam bidang fisioterapi, pemulihan carakerja, teknologi makmal perubatan, pengimejan perubatan, kejururawatan dan kesihatan persekitaran. Perpustakaan ini dikendalikan oleh dua orang kakitangan profesional dan empat orang kakitangan sokongan. Sehingga kini, koleksi perpustakaan berjumlah sebanyak 7, 266 buku, 30 jurnal, 100 CDRom dan sejumlah kecil kaset video. Selain itu, perpustakaan juga melanggan kepada beberapa pengkalan data elektronik dalam bidang perubatan dan berkaitan seperti OVID, MD Consult, Tomes Plus, Health and Wellness Reference Center Academic dan LexisNexis. Buat masa ini, perpustakaan sedang giat melaksanakan projek pengkelasan semula buku-buku berkelas R dibawah skim pengkelasan Library of Congress kepada skim pengkelasan National Library of Medicine. Peralihan ini dirasakan wajar oleh kerana skim pengkelasan NLM adalah lebih khusus dan kebanyakan perpustakaan perubatan di Malaysia menggunakannya. Bagi tujuan ini, kakitangan perpustakaan dibantu oleh lima orang penuntut tahun akhir UiTM dibawah Skim Khidmat Pelajar UiTM. Kami berharap projek ini dapat disiapkan menjelang semester akan datang. In order to study the pathogenesis of meningitis blood monocytes were triggered by cerebrospinal fluid CSF ; and by sera from patients with bacterial and abacterial meningitis Methods: Cerebrospinal fluid and blood serum were collected upon admission from nine patients with bacterial meningitis and twenty-four patients with abacterial meningitis. Mononuclear cells were isolated from healthy individuals after density gradient centrifugation of heparinized whole blood over Ficoll-Hypaque. They were then washed three times with Phospate-Buffered Saline pH: 7.2 ; and suspended in flasks. After incubation for one hour at 37C under 5% CO2, nonadherent cells were removed and monocytes were re-suspended in 12-well plates in RPMI with 10% FBS and 2 mM glutamine at a density of 1 105 cells well. After 30 minutes of incubation at 37C in 5% CO2 100 ll of sampled CSF and 100 ll of sampled serum of each patient were added into different wells of each of the volunteers. Cells were subsequently incubated for 18 hours at 37C in 5% CO2. TNF-a, interleukin-1b IL-1b ; , IL-10, IL-12, IL-6 and interferon-c IFN-c ; were measured in culture supernatants with an enzyme immunoassay; procalcitonin PCT ; by an assay based on immunochemoluminescence. In the last years, we have investigated the utility of some lipases, specially, the lipase B from Candida antarctica CAL-B ; to catalyze the aminolysis of esters3, 4. In these processes, optically active esters, amines and amides have been obtained. In the present work, we describe the resolution of some racemic 2-phenylcycloalkanamines following the methodology developed in our research group. Under these conditions the enzyme catalyzed acylation of the R ; -enantiomer of the amine preferentially, the resulting R ; -acetamides and the remaining S ; -amines being easily separated by selective extraction and isolated in very high yields 85 % ; . From the conversion values and enantiomeric excesses showed in Table I, it can be deduced that trans-isomers 2 and 4 are more suitable substrates for the enzyme in comparison with the cis-isomers 1 and 3. In addition, the size of the cycle plays a key role in the enantioselectivity of these reactions, cyclopentanamines being transformed with higher E values than the corresponding cyclohexyl analogous. It is of note the high rate of conversion and the low E value achieved in the reaction with 2-phenylcyclopropanamine and desmopressin. 5.
